While on an expedition in Virginia, he and his men were attacked by Indians. Smith was tried and sentenced to die, but was supposedly saved by Pocahontas. Raleigh sent several expeditions to the New World, but they all failed due to inadequate supplies. The men made landfall on May 14, and named the small peninsula settlement and nearby river in honor of their king, James I. At Jamestown, the first representative government of the American continent was established.
However, the site of the settlement was a poor choice, the men were ill equipped for manual labor, and disease took a heavy toll. Additionally, no gold was found, and the men showed little interest in farming the land. Brave and daring, they were willing to leave the comfort and safety of their homeland to face the challenges of the untamed wilderness in Virginia. The arrival of women created a sense of stability and permanence, making Virginia home, not just a temporary place to make a profit or find adventure.

The threat of an attack by the Spanish military or Native Americans made the early settlement vulnerable. Jamestown served as capital of Virginia until when the seat of government was moved to Williamsburg.
Jamestown is also notable for its role in the development of the fledgling American democracy. This group met in Jamestown beginning in Jamestown went on to become the capital of Virginia, a role it held until English businessmen formed large companies to trade with Russia and India. Some other businessmen organized Virginia Company in to set up colony in America. This company took a charter from the English king which gave them right to rule in the name of English king from Virginia to Maine.

During a period of captivity with the colonists, Pocahontas had previously converted to Christianity and changed her name to Rebecca. Shortly after the ship that she had boarded for her journey home had slipped its moorings, it was realised that Pocahontas was seriously unwell and after sailing just a few miles down the Thames it docked again at Gravesend.
It was here that she died in , aged just 22, possibly of influenza, pneumonia or smallpox. She was buried in the nave of the nearby St. John Rolfe returned to Virginia later that year.
Tobacco quickly became the rage throughout Europe and by Jamestown was a boom town, exporting more that 10 tons of the precious leaves. More workers were urgently needed to help bring in the tobacco crop.
