Stamps also honor John Smith and Pocahontas. Captain John Smith is the best known of the early settlers of Virginia. At the young age of 26, he began trying to colonize Jamestown.

While on an expedition in Virginia, he and his men were attacked by Indians. Smith was tried and sentenced to die, but was supposedly saved by Pocahontas. Raleigh sent several expeditions to the New World, but they all failed due to inadequate supplies. The men made landfall on May 14, and named the small peninsula settlement and nearby river in honor of their king, James I. At Jamestown, the first representative government of the American continent was established.

However, the site of the settlement was a poor choice, the men were ill equipped for manual labor, and disease took a heavy toll. Additionally, no gold was found, and the men showed little interest in farming the land. Brave and daring, they were willing to leave the comfort and safety of their homeland to face the challenges of the untamed wilderness in Virginia. The arrival of women created a sense of stability and permanence, making Virginia home, not just a temporary place to make a profit or find adventure.

He chose these name in honor of the virgin queen, Elizabeth. Henry used logic and common sense to persuade the colonists in his pre-Revolutionary War speech. Before the war began, Britain was shipping troops to the colonies, but claimed that they were at peace.

He was initially a merchant whose shipping business was greatly affected by the Intolerable Acts, propelling him into the Revolutionary cause. Once the Revolution had passed, Hancock became the First governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was most famous for his large signature on the Declaration of Independence as well as being a statesman, Second President of the Continental Congress, and Authoritative voice of the Revolution.

Hancock joined the Sons of Liberty so as to oppose British influence in the colonies. The colony of Jamestown was started as a fort with wooden walls built to protect and enclose the colonists. The threat of an attack by the Spanish military or Native Americans made the early settlement vulnerable. Jamestown served as capital of Virginia until when the seat of government was moved to Williamsburg.

Jamestown is also notable for its role in the development of the fledgling American democracy. This group met in Jamestown beginning in Jamestown went on to become the capital of Virginia, a role it held until English businessmen formed large companies to trade with Russia and India. Some other businessmen organized Virginia Company in to set up colony in America. This company took a charter from the English king which gave them right to rule in the name of English king from Virginia to Maine.

English businessmen put up money for the purpose. Other men, called settlers, agreed to live and work in the colony. The Virginia Company had poured people and resources into the venture with a zero return on its investment. Fortunes however started to change quite dramatically in , when John Rolfe, who had introduced a new strain of tobacco into the colony, started to export it.

The taste of Virginia tobacco proved very much the flavour of the day throughout the taverns and streets of London and the demand for the new cash crop rose exponentially. During a period of captivity with the colonists, Pocahontas had previously converted to Christianity and changed her name to Rebecca. Shortly after the ship that she had boarded for her journey home had slipped its moorings, it was realised that Pocahontas was seriously unwell and after sailing just a few miles down the Thames it docked again at Gravesend.

It was here that she died in , aged just 22, possibly of influenza, pneumonia or smallpox. She was buried in the nave of the nearby St. John Rolfe returned to Virginia later that year.

Tobacco quickly became the rage throughout Europe and by Jamestown was a boom town, exporting more that 10 tons of the precious leaves. More workers were urgently needed to help bring in the tobacco crop. Later that year a solution presented itself when a passing Dutch slave trader willingly exchanged his cargo of 20 Africans for food.

These Africans became indentured servants, similar in position to many poor Englishmen who traded several years of labour in exchange for passage to America. It appears that the Jamestown colonists had failed in their original mission to find a route South Seas, and failed to locate the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island, but they had at least found gold. The game tells the story of a man named Walter Raleigh Sir Walter Raleigh, to be exact, if we can assume that this is the same famous explorer , an Englishman who has escaped from prison when he was about to be executed for an unknown crime the actual Sir Walter Raleigh was executed for supposedly being in the Main Plot against King James.

In an attempt to clear his name and earn the pardon of the British king, he travels to Jamestown, one of the British colonies in the new world, in hopes of earning glory and fame.

You see, this is a Schizo-Tech version of The Colonial Period , with airships capable of taking off into space, and man has colonized Mars. The colony of Jamestown in particular is set in contested territory, with the English fighting against a joint effort between the Spanish and the indigenous Martians.

After barely surviving a recent attack, Raleigh flies onward searching for the lost colony of Roanoke. From there, the clues in the way slowly bring our protagonist towards the uncovering of an Evil Plan engineered by the Spanish general that may put all of the colonies in danger The game can be purchased on Steam.
