Olivarri worked in a variety of settings, including schools, juveniles, residential treatment centers, and inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Olivarri completed his predoctoral internship at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center, where he worked in an outpatient clinic and inpatient psychiatric hospital serving children, adolescents, and their families. Olivarri completed his postdoctoral internship at the Austin Child Guidance Center, where he conducted bilingual therapies and testing services.
Olivarri then transitioned to working in the state hospital system for 5 years, where he worked in the inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric units at the Austin State Hospital and San Antonio State Hospital.
Olivarri served as the unit director of the adolescent unit at the San Antonio State Hospital and oversaw the development of many initiatives to improve the psychological treatment of adolescents undergoing severe psychological distress.
